  1. Muslims pray 5 times a day (salah). Prayer helps to purify a person when he or she sins. A person who performs his daily prayers can be as pure as the person who takes a bath five times a day in a river as mentioned by the Prophet (pbuh)in the following hadith (book of narrations originating from the words and deeds of the prophet): “Suppose there is a river that flows in front of your house and you take a wash five times in it. Then would there remain any dirt and filth on you after that? Performing daily prayers five times a day is similar to that which washes away sins”. This means that Salat cleans human soul and purifies man’s heart.
The essence of Salat comprises three basic elements. It is composed of a) Feeling of respect, reverence and awe in the heart totally, b) Remembrance of Allah by tongue (word), c) Showing bodily (physical) respect and reverence to Allah at the utmost degree.
When the Prayer is performed properly - with due humility and remembrance of God - it has a lasting effect on the person. It fills his heart with the remembrance of God, and with fear of and hope in Him. He will not want to move from that lofty position by disobeying God.
Prayers also affect the life of the Muslim by encouraging him to schedule his activities around their fixed times. There is some flexibility, for each time is actually a span of one hour or more. But the Muslim who is conscious of God will strive to schedule his life in such a way that he does not miss any of the Prayers - for example, by postponing a shopping trip until after a Prayer, or by taking a break from work, or by sleeping earlier so as to able to rise for the Dawn Prayer.
Therefore, if one really believes in God, he will show it by his commitment to the five daily Prayers, and these, in turn, will help him to live righteously.

  2. Salah is the 2nd and most important pillar of Islam. The second you say the 1st Kalima, salah is mandatory on every Muslim. There are no excuses, not even when you are ill, on a journey or even in war.
Salah strengthens the foundations of our faith. It prepares a person to live the life of goodness and obedience to Allah and it builds courage and determination. Every time we perform salah, we renew our commitments to Allah and we rid ourselves from worldly pressures 5 times a day.
Prophet Muhammad said "The person that observes prayer properly, the prayer itself, blesses him with good wishes."
The last thing that Prophet Muhammad emphasized at his deathbed was SALAH. He also said the first thing we will have to answer about on the day of judgement is SALAH.
